la Barbecue on East Cesar Chavez is a barbecue spot that dives deep into Texas tradition with a clear focus on smoked meats done right. Known especially for its brisket, pork ribs, and turkey, this place is where barbecue fans come prepared to savor the tender, richly flavored results of long, slow smoking. Those who crave that smoky crust and moist interior will find satisfaction here, whether ordering a half pound of brisket or a plate of pork ribs that practically fall off the bone.

The atmosphere matches its no-frills approach: casual, lively, and welcoming to both locals and visitors. Seating options include both indoor and outdoor spaces, which suits Austin’s warm climate well, though the vibe stays straightforward—expect to wait in line, especially on weekends or around lunchtime, when the crowds are steady. The waiting experience is softened by occasional beer giveaways, a small touch appreciated by those who come with hungry appetites and patience.

Sides like creamy mac and cheese and classic potato salad are reliable companions to the meat, with a few unique additions like spicy kimchi and pickled cucumbers that give some dishes a brighter edge. For those interested in bringing a bit of la Barbecue home, their sweet and tangy house sauces and even some branded merch are available for purchase.

This spot fits neatly into the East Austin neighborhood’s evolving culinary landscape, appealing to BBQ purists and casual diners alike. Visiting around midweek mornings can cut down on wait times, making it easier to enjoy a well-rounded meal without the crowd. Fans of Texas barbecue will find la Barbecue a staple stop for its straightforward, deeply satisfying smoked meats and familiar side dishes that lean into classic flavors rather than elaborate experiments.

Definitely will go back, had a great time and the food was amazing. Liked the brisket and the Mac and cheese the best tbh. I think it’s so nice of you guys to give out free beer while people are waiting in line

It’s rare that food makes you forget you’ve been standing in line for nearly an hour, but this barbecue is absolutely worth every minute. The pork ribs, turkey, and brisket were stunning. Each cut was beautifully smoked, tender to the point of falling apart, and packed with deep, soulful flavor that only comes from hours of care and attention. This is the kind of barbecue that doesn’t just satisfy—it stops you in your tracks. The sides were just as impressive. The pickled red onions, spicy pickles, and house-made kimchi brought brightness and crunch that perfectly complemented the richness of the meats. Every bite was balanced, thoughtful, and exciting. This is Austin barbecue at its finest. There will probably be a line. It will probably be long. But once you take that first bite, you’ll understand why people wait. And why it’s absolutely worth it.

If you go at 11:30am on a Wednesday with about a 10 minute tiny wait. Was fantastic. The overall collection of food was outstanding from top to bottom. The meat to the sides were all home runs. If you’re looking for some of the best traditional bbq in Texas this is a staple on the list. Personally loved the Pork Ribs. Thought they slightly edged out the brisket and turkey. The turkey though may of been the best turkey of my life. Also don’t forget to get the shells and cheese it was delicious and I’m glad we ordered a little extra to take home.

Incredible barbecue! we got the sliced brisket, ribs, regular and jalepeno sausage. The ribs were so tender and just fell off the bone. The brisket had a nice fat layer. Our favorite side was the Mac and cheese. We added the pickles and jalepeno to the potato salad to give it a little more flavor. The kimchi was super spicy and was more peppers than cabbage so not traditional kimchi. Definitely order ahead to save time otherwise you'll have to wait in line. We ordered about a week in advance and just walked in, they asked if we wanted to eat there and then brought it out to a table 5 minutes later. The staff was very firnedly and helpful!

Currently my 2nd favorite BBQ, but favorite in Austin! You can NOT get better pork ribs than La Barbecue, they are phenomenal! The turkey is very juicy and flavorful and the brisket is very good also. They have good bread, really good Mac n cheese and solid potato salad. You can sit inside or outside, the atmosphere is okay, but its a BBQ joint so thats somewhat to be expected. Got there about 30 minutes after opening and waited about 45 minutes but its worth it! Can't wait to go back! Just wish they had sweet tea! It is Texas BBQ amd for me thats a big plus/minus. Nice people!

The food at this Austin BBQ is absolutely delicious everything we tried was amazing! The service is impeccable, and the atmosphere is really pleasant. There can be a wait, but we were lucky, we waited about 25 minutes max. The way they let people in gradually by tables is very organized, which I really appreciated. Once inside, you place your order and then find a seat. We tried the brisket, brisket sandwich, pork, BBQ ribs, and BBQ pork, they were all incredible! The meat was so tender it fell right off the bone, perfectly cooked, and full of flavor. Unfortunately, by the time we arrived, the ribs were already sold out, but I’ve heard they’re amazing and I’ll definitely come back to try them. The bathrooms are fun, and the overall vibe is great. I was lucky enough to meet the owner, a Masterchef, who is a wonderful and very friendly person, she even took a photo with us! I highly recommend this restaurant and will definitely return. 10/10, 100% recommended!
